You absolutely have to show a key to get to elevator to room floors. But if you have multi guests, this is what you need to do.
Make a list of people coming to room, with time frame of entering and leaving room. Give it to guard and possible he will let people enter w/o having you present. Otherwise you need to bring them w/ you as you pass. Also give the man a $20.00. For being a pain. I've done this, but we were only having 8 people visit.

Most of the hotels on the Strip have security posted at the entrance to the elevators - especially at night when it's busier. This is to protect the registered guests to keep just anyone from wandering the hotel and victimizing guests - that's why you have to show your room key to get into the elevator.

Yes a key is ABSOLUTELY necessary in this hotel. They will even make sure you are a guest at the hotel BEFORE you reach the main lobby in the parking lot. It feels like your entering a different country. (border patrol)

I don't know about the Venetian, but when we were at Treasure Island it was no problem during the day.

But during the late night hours they did have a security person at the elevators checking to see if you had a key. I don't know if that was normal or some special thing.

If you've already checked into your hotel room. You just have to goto your room and unlock your door with your key. Noone will be there to watch you so I doubt if anyone will know how many guests you have with you. So, long as you're not being too obvious eg: 20 people.
