Yes the average hieght is going up every year. In early 1800's average hieght for man would have been about 5 foot 4 inches and by end of the century it was about 5' 6" and now i think its about 5' 9" A clue can be taken from early architecture where many room hieghts were less than 6 feet high. In Montrose there is a pend between two houses that is only 5 foot 7 inches high. So to be sure we are all getting taller.

Interesting that another fellow has used Napoleon as an example that we aren't getting taller, when I'm about to use him as an example that we are!

It is commonly held that short people have a chip on their shoulder. This is often called a Napoleonic complex, as people say he was so war-hungry due to his short stature.

Napoleon was 5 foot 6 inches tall, and while that is indeed short for our times, but two hundred years ago it was the average height of a Frenchman.

I've not heard of the height restriction for Napoleons guard, I'd be interested to see a source...

Yes, people have gradually gotten taller.

It doesn't usually happen as quickly as it had with your family, but in general and over a period of many generations. The Dutch are currently some of the world's tallest.

As someone mentioned before, you can tell the difference in the height of rooms in old buildings, but what has always struck me most is how the length of beds has changed. Get yourself to a museum and take a look!

It has. Better nutrition had led to taller people. So generally speaking people are taller.

In places where nutrition and health have decreased (North Korea for example) average height has also decreased.

No on average it hasn't!! This is applicable only PERHAPS in north America because of different foods, lifestyles etc... But don't be fooled into thinking that tall people weren't around a 100 years ago. They were around in great numbers throughout history. Heck, in order to be one of Napoleon's guards there was a height requirement or AT LEAST 6 feet, and many were much taller.
