I don't actually go into chat rooms so can't really comment on them....
what made me laugh & you a bit pissed off was the fact that some people read a line or two of someone's question here on Y/A then jump straight in with what they think is a smart answer...like some have here.....you're right, they should read your question properly before commenting on it....I find that sooooo annoying.....anyway, sorry I couldn't give my opinion on chat rooms....I'll take your word for it though.....

I do understand exactly what you are saying. Most chat rooms are full of people flirting, I have tried to go into a chat room and strike up a debate or intelligent conversation which pretty much has fallen flat. The reason I use chat rooms, or at least try to, is because I am a single mum which means my evenings are spent on my own. I am interested in people and would rather chat on the internet than watch the soaps, but finding an intelligent diverse individual is a bloody rareity. Perhaps I should open up my own chat site strictly for people who want to say more than "are you horny" or asking for ASL

I live alone, sometimes I don't feel like reading, or watching tv on a miserable January evening - I feel like communicating - phone is not easy because I don't hear too well, so I have been in chat rooms. They are frustrating annoying funny silly entertaining even...it depends on your mood.
Most people aren't there to make conversation they are there just to "chat" hence the name. Chit chat in other words, they fill a gap in a lot of peoples lives particularly those who are confined to their homes and can't get out and live alone.
I would love a serious conversation online and one day might find a room where there are like-minded people - but til then, when I am bored I shall go in a chat room and see who I can stir up!! :-)

Yes you're right, there must be some 'normal' people out there but the chances of crossing paths on a chat room are slim.
