i understand your question, i think , where was whatever that susposedly exploded at when it exploded. if no universe, time or space was present, what is left? nothing. 0 point singularities do not come from nothing, other dimensions have to have other dimensions. where is the starting point for all these other planes/dimensions,parallel universes, etc. space is a misnomer, even the great voids of outerspace have to be composed of something(dark matter/energy theory bites )too.what is the essence of existence(the 64 dollar queston)

the universe is constantly expanding. If you travel back in time, you will find that it shrinks. If you go all the way back to the big bang, you will find the universe and all the matter and energy contained in it, to be a plank sized 'nugget'. This was all there was. the universe was only the size of the stuff that made it up, which, depending on the theory you take stake in, was a 0 dimensional point, or a plank sized wad.

hawking and penrose showed that the universe must be the result of an expanding singularity.
A single point in space, exploding in what people call the big bang.
as an evidence he explained that the ammount of energy was high enough to bend the light on the inner wall of the shockwave into itself, with the result that we just observe the weak background radiation of something which bounced itself dead deeply out there.

I think hawking stated, that it does not make sense to think in what was there 'before it was there' ..
he said so, cause there was no time, and no matter.

The matter we observe today can be explained by splitting energy into matter and gravitation in a away that it holds its energy balance of zero. sooo

whats out there ?
anything imaginable that has no matter and no time.
maybe nothing ... we never get to know

this question is one of the things the human mind can't really get rid off. 'what was before ... ?' well...
try to define what a possible 'before's properties are ?
no time, no energy, no mass.. theres nothing much left, huh ?
