As a resident of Philadelphia currently, I recommend it highly! I love this city! There is so much to do! While you are here, you can experience the history, the food, the nightlife, the fun!

The historical part of Philadelphia is beautiful! If you head a few blocks over to Old City, there are great restaurants and clubs. There is great shopping on Walnut Street, or Antique Row is also great shopping if you are into that kind of thing! South Street can be interesting shopping. You can visit Penn's landing and see the Navy Yard, etc... If you are looking for a relaxing day, I'd head over to Fairmount Park and just walk around there (plus the Art Museum is there). The Franklin Institute is not too far away from Fairmount as well - and they have a great Tut exhibit going on right now! Rittenhouse Park is gorgeous in the spring. It's a bit cold here right now, so I'd wait to visit for at least another month when it begins to warm up!

I have to be fair to the northeast and start by saying that I'm from south Texas, and life is very different between the two regions.

I lived in the Philadelphia area for about a year. The suburb where I lived was ok, but as for Philly itself, a lot of areas are ghetto. The city is run down almost everywhere you go, overcrowded, overtaxed, overpriced, aesthetically unpleasing, and right across the river from the most dangerous city in America - Camden, NJ. I didn't care much for the bitter attitude of people there either.

However, having said that it's a very old American city and there's a lot of history there. It's not a bad place to visit, just not a good place to live. I've never been to Compton but the only people who seem to like it enough to even mention it are gangsta rappers. So I'd have to take Philly.

Philly, definitely. Why compare the whole city of Philadelphia to Compton. Yes, there is North Philly and West Philly, which are just as bad as Compton, but people generally don't go to LA to visit Compton unless they want to score a few rounds of crack.

The people that think that Philadelphia is full of crime are living in the past. There are areas of the city that you don't want to walk around at night. However, as a tourist here, you would be in the lovely downtown area, and there is no reason to worry there.
Besides, check out everything that you might see...

I live outside of Philadelphia and I would recommend visiting it. But wait a month or so it is cold here now!

Things to check out (most of this stuff is right in center city and very safe with tons of park ranger dudes around):

Liberty Bell
Constitution Center
Independence Hall
Art Museum (or the steps if you are a Rocky fan)
Franklin Institute (Ben invented a ton of stuff)
Ride the Ducks tour

Citizens Bank Park is a great new ballpark for any baseball fan!
Pat's King of the Philly Cheese Steaks!

Well I'm from Pittsburgh....so I would take Compton any day of the week...plus I been there before and it's really not that bad. Your more likely to get in a bad situation in Philly or the Burgh any day of the week!

Philadelphia...there are some cool places and bad places, you just have to know where to go. I'm from Philadelphia and people i know always seem weary of coming into the city, but i let them see trhe good side the city has to offer and each time they always want to come back. we go out for dinner or to the musuem or just hang out where everyone else does..rude people yes but that's just life..

Philly! Compton sucks!

I'd much rather go to a classier city though, like a less crime city. Like Huntington Beach, CA!
