I dont want to sound racist, because I in no way hate black people. It's simply an inquiry. What is with "black" names? Im not talking about african names, but names like shaniqua, Latika, Shaquana, etc. They dont even have a real meaning like most names. Are they made up or something?

This is not strictly a "black" problem. A lot of people, regardless of colour, want to name their children with unique and unusual names. And they take these names from the sound of other names in their cultures, but "tweaked" to make it one of a kind.

I find absolutely nothing wrong with this. It is a personal choice and nothing more.

What I find weird are people who name their kids after cars...Mercedes, Cougar, Ford, Cadillac. Or people who name their kids after cities...Denver, Houston, Angeles, Paris etc.

A name is a name. It's something to identify yourself with and whether or not it has meaning, it doesn't make it right or wrong. People of all cultures have names that sound odd to those not of that culture because maybe that's not what you're used to.

My name is Raychelle and I'm white. It's pronounced Rachel but my parents wanted me to be unique. I get comments all the time from people of my own race that my name is weird because it's not what they're used to.

We like making up names that will individualize us. We want to be unique.

And to r m.....everything is not made up most of that is remembrance, celebration or what we've earned. Lincoln has his own day and he didn't emancipate the slaves out of the goodness of his heart, he did it to save the Union. He said it himself that if he didn't have to he wouldn't. So...........either your being a hater or your wasting your time and everyone else's by talking out of your butt.

And another thing...I'm starting to wondering how old you are because it would be a shame for an adult to look that dumb because a high school junior can have a lot more sense than you.

Have a wonderful day.

Society is much less formal than it used to be. We use Firstnames more often than surnames now and these have become increasingly important in terms of a person's identity. The emergence of the Internet and Mobile phones has lead to the creation and total acceptance of new spellings which have given us a whole new modern dictionary. Modern Afro-American names are the leaders in adopting such changes in name's."

There was a black business owner own a talk show stating that when he gets a resume or application for employment, he will not hire anyone with those names because it shows they are anti establishment and the names are a form of revolt.

I'm just repeating a black man.

I don't know, but honest to God, one day I went into a fast food establishment and the girl behind the counter had on a name tag that read, "Vegina." Her mother should have been beaten with a big stick.

I've wondered why people name their children strange names in general. Not just Black people but people of all races. Why would someone name their child a strange name at all like Apple or whatever?

My exe's middle name is Alima and her mother chose that because it is from their ancestor's home in Sierra Leone. I think the names you've mentioned are variations on West African names.

Yes, and not only are black parents burdoning their children with having a difficult and weird name, they are also hurting them in the future by giving them less of a chance to find work. Studies have shown that those with urban names, such as Jamal, Latoya, Monique, etc, have a far greater challenge finding work just because of their names.
