The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing will tell you what you need to do in order to get your credential. You can major in anything and still become a teacher. You will have to take a few tests in order to get your credential. You have to get a BA/BS degree and pass the CBEST, the RICA, and verify your subject matter competency. You also have to do student teaching. You will find all of this information on the CCTC website. If you are serious about teaching, make sure you meet with an advisor so you can start planning your classes.

Talk to your advisor. They can get you into the elementary education department and get you started taking classes to prepare you to be a teacher. You will take classes in how to design lesson plans, manage your classroom (discipline), stages of learning, and you will be set up with experienced teachers to observe first, and then later teach lessons of your own. Before you get your actual teacher certification, you will have to take one or more tests (which your education classes will prepare you for). All of this is pretty standard. I don't know details about California because I live in Texas, but the basic procedure is the same.
