what is the smart port on the rokenbok for?

there is a 6 pin connector on the side of the rokenbok control deck and I am trying to figure out what it is for.

The smartport device appears to have been patented in 2001 http://www.patentgenius.com/patent/6247994.html

However, it does not appear that the device has yet been put into use.
