Can a Dell PC be recovered by using the keyboard, ie. pressing F11/F12, friends lost recovery cd and needs to re format. Cheers

Without the recovery cd's, no.

Dell does not use recovery partitions like other manufacturers do. He could call dell and order replacements, but they are likely to charge him an arm and a leg.

You could just reinstall windows with a regular windows XP disk and just download the drivers from Dells website. That would save him a bunch of money.

if your p.c didnt come with a recovery disk then yes you can recover using your f keys
this is because all p.c manufactuters have to supply a recovery disk or some way of recovering your p.c back to a factory state
personally i prefer the keyboard way,the manufacturer create a small partition on the hard drive were they place a ghost image of your operating system
there are a few options when you enter the recovery screen,you can do a fresh install without data(you will loose all data) and you can do a reinstall with all your previous data,however if you are doing a recovery due to a virus or spyware infection this option should be avoided
i think the key you need to press is f11

it depends on what it is dell dimention will recover to factory settings ctlr f11 on start up
