Because Simon Cowell is a douche bag. Also, he's talking about pop music. Not everybody listens to pop music.
Plus, Bob Dylan is an undeniable music genius. Simple as that. AND he started his career well before the age of music videos. Most people probably had no idea what he looked like when they first heard his music, so I'm sure that didn't hurt him -- they just knew they were hearing some excellent music.

There is only one winner in the competition and they are basing everything with what America decides......so it is difficult to say it is not a good singer or a good singer!!!
The fact is, that they are not great when they sing at the program but they are not bad that they won't succeed after!!!
Even the guys or gals that leave on first rounds elimination with the right training, enthusiasm, and a good representant can later become an Idol although they won't have the full support American Idol provide their winners!!!
That is why you can not just go with his opinion although he is pretty much right on the money.....if he wasn't as much of an icehole that he is, why would anyone take his advice and vote for that choice.............and don't forget this other point, if he is as bad as people say....how come he still keeps coming year after year on the show and still respected above Paula, and Randy.....although they also do a good job but Simon seems to be more creadible and most people follow with his advice!!!

Bob Dylan had too much sense to appear on such a program as American Idol. And Simon Cowell is paid to be an idiot.

Cowell thinks the world is watching his show, but there is a substantial number of people listening to Bob Dylan in that time frame.

Simon is just a donkey with no talent, so he was forced into a job criticizing the things that he wishes he could do. Dylan has one of the worst voices on the planet but it's not the way he chooses to say things, it's the content of his lyrics that really matters. Kids these days need to learn about the true poets.

Bob Dylan wrote lyrics that were not only meaningful but potent and he never sang them with anything less than pure conviction.
The structure of his musical composition was against the grain (people tend to reject something simply because it's not what they are trained to expect) but his unusual melodies were catchy in their own original way. In fact it is BECAUSE of that originality not inspite of it that his music has staying power. So many catchy little dittys might be stuck in your head today but, to paraphrase another famous Dylan, "their words have forked no lightning before going silently into the night".
Also a lot of popular music today is based on his inovation. Later generations are too used to hearing it since it's been imitated so much since then.
Simon can predict what the masses want only because the masses are so predictable. Plus he can't really be "right" or "wrong" in matters of subjective opinion. What he probably means is that he knows what is easier to sell to a broad demographic.

people need to understand that simon is not saying a person can not be successful in music (i'm leaving out the rejects here and i'm talking about the people who are just not good enough) but that this is american idol a show trying to find a POP star. and not everyone has the voice or image to be a teen pop star.....bob dylan does not have a pop star voice or look, anyone who comes in and tries to sing with a more rock or hip hop style will be turned away this is POP music.....people don't get that

He is only right because people believe he is right. Actually, I would like to see him get up on the stage and sing.
However, he is doing the job he was hired to do. Be a complete jerk. If he was a nice guy and always had nice comments and was never rude, then American Idol would have not finished the first season.
