Listening to the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, I am amazed by the stamina that must be required of a drummer. I grew up listening to rock in the late 60s/early 70s and think that is really where the drummer came to be so crucial to the rock and roll band.

Are there any drummers from the 1963 or earlier that you might have heard that would show that they were capable of the same type of rapid fire percussion as we are hearing now.

One answer reminded me of Gene Krupa and I found this video which reminded me of Lionel Hampton. Enjoy.

as a drummer i tell you that today's drummers make mostly noise with all the cymbals and double pedals....
what people don't understand is that speed is not so important, what you want is a good melody-like the guy from Chili Peppers with the funky style thing he does

i think Keith Moon from The Who had a good speed and sometimes used really complex stuff
the guy from the Ramones had a very simple beat, but the speed of the rythm is impressive-i can't play an entire song sometimes lol oh and Buddy Rich, of course, thanks for reminding
