Or peacock cichlids:

Thought the fish in the answers before are pretty to look at and have great colors, they are also aggressive and will chase any other fish you put in your tank. Also unless you want to worry about your tank population increasing, you want to avoid Mollies and guppies. These fish are easy to keep and do well in most tanks, but are livebare fish. About once a month depending on tank temp, they will give birth to 5-20 live offspring that will grow to sexual maturity with a month.

What you want to do is go into the pet store and pick one fish that catches your fancy and then have the sales person talior the selection of fish you put in your tank to compliment each other.

I've had good luck with tetras and they come in a mulitude of shapes, sizes and colors. Most are not aggressive. These will allow you to have a shark, or a range of bottom feeders, or even add other types of no aggressive fish at a later date.

Well, you are going to need to figure out what kind you want, like Tropical. I have a Tropical 20 gallon tank, and I have 4 male Guppies, 2 female Guppies, a snail, and I am planning on getting a Cory Catfish. They are all pretty cool...but I ust to have Ghost Catfish, they are so cool...you can see its insides. You can also see Glass Fish insides! So, as you can see...I like the Tropical Community. HAVE FUN!

I would suggest Rainbowfish...they are the most beautiful, peaceful (non-aggressive), non-saltwater fish you can get. THey swim around a lot and are fun to watch.

Cichlids are great too, but are aggressive and require a lot of attention (to make sure they arent killing each other).....

i would suggest Red Rainbowfish, Turquoise Rainbowfish, Boesman's Rainbowfish to name a few....get 4 or 5 of the type you get, as they like to swim in schools.

Check out the link below to see a live video of a rainbowfish tank (NOT MINE!)

I always liked Gar's.. but fair warning they will eat just about any other fish in your tank... kindda barracuda looking (particularly with all those teeth) and will get quite large in a tank that size

African cichlids! You can buy them small and cheap, and they grow really fast. They are as pretty as the saltwater fish, and easy to take care of. Just don't mix the African fish with any other kind...they are territorial. Good luck!

Coolness is in the eye of the beholder, I imagine, but since you said cool and not cheap, the cichlid Altolamprologus Compressiceps is one of the coolest looking that I've kept:

Frilled shark if you can get one or well, you should get tiger barbs, for a first timer, or guppies, and if you may get a Siamese fighting fish to add the action.
