My sons Ford Taurus makes a "scraping" sound everytime he hits the brakes, my husband checked them (he has alot of experience with repairing brakes on cars and trucks, but is NOT a mechanic) and said the brakes were fine, he did need to replace a rusted brake line. He also said there was alot of "dust" in the brakes. It is still making a scraping noise, what else could it be? I am gonna take it to Midas. (Hubby is gonna be mad) Any ideas?

Mine are doing the same thing. Sometimes sediment just builds up in the area between the rotors and the tires and causes the squeeling noise you hear. I took it into a mechanic because I figured I needed new brake pads and they indicated that the brakes were fine.

It might be dust in the brakes, but my bet is that you have at least one worn set of pads, and the scraping you hear is your rotors be ground down. Not a good thing! Have your brakes checked by a pro.

4 WHEEL BRAKE SERVICE, front/rear brake reline, caliper service, brake pad replacement...any of the services listed above should correct the "scrape noise"

all those scrappy noises comes from the vibration and friction in be-twin "the metallic back-plate of the brakes pads and the caliper piston"
if ,Your husband apply (with the fingers) a thin film of RTV silicone in THE BACK of the brake's pads the noise will go.

What comes around goes around, my wife drives me nuts on brake noise......nut's I tell You.

If your husband pulled the tires and visually inspected the breaks, and found the break pads/drums not to be worn down to metal, then it Might be something else.

Generally, a metal on metal scraping sound indictates the pads/drums are worn down to bare metal, there is also a "warning" wand attached to the pad/drum that sticks up, as the pad/drum get worn down, the wond will hit the surface of the pad/drum and purposley cause a loud scraping noise to Warn the Driver that thier brakes are in need of service.

Brake pads and drums are no longer made of asbesto's; they are made of a different materiel and break squeaking is now common pace in some vehicles; the dust is Normal also due to asbesto's replacment since yopur not a certified mechanic, spend the $ on Midas as they offer a lifetime warranty....how can you compare that price of peice of mind?

Midas is a huge rip off. never heard any good things about them if you are going to go against your husband anyway find a small long established garage not a national chain and have them look at it. but if the pads and rotors are good it is fine most likely he has lifetime brake pads they are very hard so they wear on the rotor instead of the pad wearing out and they tend to make some noise because they are made sooo hard to last a long time.

the scraping you hear is probably worn pads, you may need to have your front pads replaced, and your rotors turned, they have probably suffered damage from the pads scraping against them.
