The last time I heard from her was last sunday. She always emails me everyday. When her computer broke down, she emailed me from an internet cafe. I would phone her, but she is Spanish and, although she can speak perfect English, her family is unable to understand English. I don't want to phone her because if she is not home, her family will not be able to tell me this. What can I do?

I do have her address, if she still has not contacted me by the weekend, then I will write her family a letter. Does anybody know any websites that would be able to translate a letter from English into Spanish?

I would phone her family anyway, most Spanish speakers do know quite a bit of English even if they claim not to, and will certainly recognise her name as long as you speak it slowly enough. If they want more information, you can say something like "es de parte de su amiga inglesa" (it's her English friend calling) and hope she hasn't got too many English friends. You will certainly be able to tell from their tone of voice if there's anything wrong.

I would phone, otherwise you will worry.

My sisters family are from Bangladesh and do not speak English. When I phone, I just ask for her by saying her name very slowly. They hang up if she isn't there. It is a little awkward, but if you say her name they will get her if she is home. I'm sure they will tell her that someone phoned for her when she gets home - hopefully she doesn't have any other English friends phoning!

You could try finding someone who speaks Spanish who could phone for you, or use a translator on line to work out a few basic sentences to say.

use a translation website to look up the phrases you need to ask her family if she's ok. spanish is pretty easy to learn- if you know even a little bit, you should be able to understand some of the key words in their reply.
Otherwise, send her an email, and wait. It could be a holiday, or she is busy with something else. It's only been a few days.

You might resort unto some hope and so wait a few more days. Hope is a virtue that is ever hard to die.

As about telephoning to your friend's family, and their language, you might not hesitate any more and so ask someone in the nearby of you who speaks Spanish to help you by telling your friend's family about your worries. This may be a way for you to know about what may have happened unto your friend, and so also to share your worries with someone else thereby also maybe lessening a bit the pressure that may come from your worries.

Good luck!

Do you have any friends that speak Spanish that can make the telephone call for you? If not (I've forgotten most of my Spanish so I cannot help you) try using Microsoft Word and, using the translation feature, you can translate your question into Spanish and attempt to use this to assist her family in understanding your question. As a last resort, if she lives in the US you can ask a local Spanish speaking officer to inquire as to her well-being.
Good Luck!

if she speaks perfect English someone in her family will also speak alittle English. I know i married an Mexican American and some of his family supposedly only spoke Spanish but when i wasn't in the room the would speak it and understand it. if she is really you're friend and you're worried about her call and find out because that is what a friend would do.She wouldn't just sit around and wait for her to appear.

I'm sure your friend will be ok, it's not so easy to get to the internet cafe every day....much easier obviously to just switch on the computer at home & send emails out......plus she has to pay each time for using a public computer...maybe that's restricting her too.....

This site may be of some help to you......you can translate english to spanish free of charge...

Try phoning her, eventually, she'll answer the phone. Or just learn how to ask for her in Spanish, if she's not there, they just won't pass the phone on to her.

I would still call. If I hadn't heard from her in a few days still call and see what the family says even if there is a language barrier.
