thank you for all the answers so far, the reason i asked the question is my 8 year old has a diagnosis of ADHD Austic Spectrum and had this diagnosed at 5 years, and because we have a lot of hurdles to get over with school e.t.c we took our son to a private psyciatrist today because didnt feel we are getting anywhere on NHS. The Doctor told us it may be that our son was starved of some oxygen at birth as i had a trial labour and went on to long and he did not cry and i do remember the doctors not answering my questions when he was born, i kept asking is he ok but i remember a silence if you know what i mean, but he appeared healthy so i thought no more of it. Can anyone relate to this, i quess i am just looking at finding a reason. Thanks for the answers its very much appreciated

Sometimes it may take a few minutes for them to cry as the fluid clears from their lungs, my little boy was born two months early and didnt cry until he was resusitated, some babies need that bit of oxygen or a few extra seconds to get their lungs working especially those born by caesarian

I work in an operating room and have assisted in tons of cesareans. Don't worry about it... lots of babies don't cry when they are born. Drugs given for a cesarean DO NOT make a baby sleepy unless you received general anesthesia (to make YOU go to sleep). If they just did a spinal or epidural block, the baby doesn't get that.
You said you have a reason for asking this question... I would guess that there are some other things that make you wonder if there's something different about your son. Just because he didn't cry is not a medical reason on it's own, but combined with other factors, it could be something. Only you know if there are other things that make you wonder. Trust your gut...Momma's gut feelings are usually correct.

my second son did not cry when born. i was worried for about two years about him. i was even worried constantly that he didnt laugh much, and the doctor would laugh at me and tell me that he will probably grow up and be someone level headed like a judge. i was irritated by the doc taking it so lightly. until my son turned three and you could really see his true personality. he is 7 now, and extremely level headed (just like the doc said) and one of the calmest most incredible people to be around. we call him the old soul. dont worry, maybe he just didnt feel the need to cry. if the doc got his airway cleared before his body started to tell him to get oxygen, he would have had no need to cry.

Not all babies cry when they are born. Espeically if it's a gentle, natural birth!

With a c/s, they may not have stimulated him to try to get him to cry. Since he wasn't pushed through your pelvis, he would be more likely to have amniotic fluid in his mouth that would need to be suctioned out so it doesn't go into his lungs. Also, if there was any concern about meconium in your fluid and meconium aspiration, they would NOT want him to cry.

Were you awake the whole time? If you fell asleep after " delivering" him, then you may not have heard him cry. If this is the case you could ask the person that was with your baby, if he cried. It might have just taken him a little longer.

My son didnt cry for hours because he had so much fluid on his chest. They wouldnt drain it so he had to fetch it up naturally. It was very scary.Im not saying thats the reason your baby didnt cry though.Im not even sure there is a medical reason for it.

Honestly don't worry. I myself am a ceasarean and I too didn't cry when I came out, nothing's wrong. I'm fine. Don't worry. I'm 25 now.

If you are concerned ,take your child to the doctor and have a complete exam.Tell him your concerns. You have a right to know whatever it is..demand to be told....Mabe another doctor should check him out.Second opinions will help ease your mind..Good luck.
