Try cutting a potato in half, and dip it into water. If the potato turns black (the white part), then you used iodine, if not, it may be bromine.

Add an organic solvent and shake the mixture. The colour in the organic layer may well now be purple, indicating iodine.

sounds like iron whch has oxidized, taste it and see if it tastes like blood
