I just can't seem to get out to meet new groups of people. One to one is OK, but groups, no, I avoid them like the plague.

Sorry I don't have an answer for you but I too suffer that phobia. It literally give me bad anxiety--when I try to mix 'n' mingle with others. But also I've been a naturally shy and quiet girl for as long as I can remember,so I'm sure that dont help any,ya know.
I see a shrink. He dont do much for me but he has put me on some meds that I think help. One is an anti-depressant and the other is especially for panic, anxiety, and phobias like you have mentioned. But I would recommend as low a dose that you see fit---cuz they can be very habit forming (which I guess is the reason they seem to work)but who knows maybe there is a different type of medicine for you.I'd speak with a doc soon.I feel for you and wish you the best.Bye bye.

The actual word for that is Agorabhobia.

Agoraphobia meaning: abnormal fear of being helpless in an embarrassing or unescapable situation that is characterized especially by the avoidance of open or public places.

Maybe you should try joining some type of team, or karate, or something, this away you'll force yourself to be around different people, getting used to it. Remember, you're all going to be there for the same reasons. As for just going out and meeting people, that will come in time. Sounds like you may have some anxiety, or self-esteem issues.

By the way, their just people, just like you, how do you know their not scared too? Eventually, there is going to be someone, in some group somewhere who is going to talk to you and you're going to talk back and then it will be like nothing.

Maybe you should try going to places accompanied by someone you trust. That way you can get used to being around people you don't know but still have someone you trust to keep you company.

Hey, I do that too. Maybe you're just nervous about meeting them and are afraid they won't like you. Have more confidence in yourself, talk about the things that interest you: your favorite books, your favorite movies, politics, the weather, etc. etc.

you need to see a therapist, or a psychiatrist.....the state offers many options to ppl who cant pay, not saying you need money, but that is a disorder that can turn into a serious phobia....agoraphobia

I hear you asshole.

I do the same thing.

Just do a little at a time, and don't be afraid to use medication if the situation gets dire.

We all need to reach out sometime!

Take Care.
