It sounds either constipated or like it have dropsy.

Don;t feed the fish for a day and then try to feed it a small piece of shelled pea. If it won;t eat, then assume it's got dropsy. You can confirm this by looking closely at the fish. If it's scales are sticking out like a pine cone, then it's got dropsy.

Dropsy is hard to cure and most fish won't live even with treatment. Treat with Furanase or Maracyn 2 for 2 weeks as directed on the package. Be sure to remove the carbon from your filter during treatment.

Best of luck

What is the natuer of the "ballooning"? Do the scales stick out from the body? Or does he just look big around?

The first condition is called dropsy - Try raising his water temperature to 82o-86o and adding a pinch of epsom salt to his water. If this doesn't help in a day or so, try an antibiotic for fish with tetracycline and follow package directions.

The second condition is most likely a swim bladder problem. This can be related to overfeeding, constipation, and improper digestion/fermentation of food. Try feeding him a bit of cooked peas with the skin off and see if this helps him. It also helps if you feed his pellets soaked in water a bit before feeding and check that his temperature is warm enough for him - 76o -80o.

I'm sorry to hear about your fish. It sounds like it prolly has a case of constipation which is very common in bettas. If it isn't too late, I would fast him for a day. Then get your self a bag of frozen peas, take one pea out and microwave it for 30 seconds. then peel the pea. take half of it and cut it into very small pieces, about half the size of your betta's eye. Feed him a few pieces (about 3 pieces). Don't feed him anything else for another day. Hopefully, it's not too bad of a blockage and it will pass. If he makes it, feed him a little bit of pea once a week as a snack. It will help prevent constipation.

Do not flush it! To humanely put a fish out of it's misery, you put them in the freezer. Put him in a cup or bowl with water and let it freeze. Their little system slowly shuts down, and it's humane

wel unfortunately its life its probably over. Fish dont live that long number one and numbe two once i fish gets sick it usually dies. It simply does not have the immune system nor does it have the ability to go to a doctor.
