I'm sorry to contradict your midwife, but using castor oil to induce pregnancy is VERY dangerous to both mother and baby.

The way castor oil can cause labor to start is by giving the mother diarrhea. When you get diarrhea, your colon muscle begin spasming, and your uterine muscles may also begin sympathetic spasms.

Now, the dangers. First of all, castor oil induced diarrhea can last for hours. So while your pushing the baby out, you may also have your loose stools released as well. This is not a good situation when you are labor, and not safe if the baby gets pushed out into it.

The greater danger lies with your baby, though. You baby is affected by everything you eat. When you drink castor oil, not only can it cause you to have bowel movements, but it can also stimulate your baby's bowels to release as well. When a baby has a bowel movement in utero, it's called muconium, which is VERY VERY harmful to the baby. Babies can inhale the muconium into their lungs, causing pneumonia.

Also, while you are experienced prolong diarrhea, you can become seriosuly dehydrated, whichj will prolong your labor and make it more painful.

Be ready to go to the bathroom a lot and make sure you drink lots and lots of fluid so you don't get dehydrated from all the bowel movements you're gonna have. I wouldn't recommend taking it at all because you're baby will come when he's good and ready, but my mom mixed hers with orange juice. Either way you go its gonna taste like poop! lol

I would be very careful doing that.. my sister in law drank castor oil and her baby had a bowel movement and she had to have an emergency c-section.. but what we mixed it with was orange juice and vanilla ice cream..it tasted like a creamsicle.. it wasnt bad.. she drank a whole bottle of castor oil like that.. I tasted it and it was pretty good. . anyway good luck..

i mixed it with orange juice and i cannot believe your midwife suggested it. it will make you naseous and give you the worst diarrhea you have ever had. just as soon as the cramps and runs kick in you WILL regret it. 2 weeks later I still hadn't had my daughter.

If a midwife really suggested it, I would be worried. It does not work most of the time and all that will happen is cramping and the runs.
