5y-8 = 3y+5

add 8 to both sides
5y = 3y+13

take 3y from both sides
2y = 13

divide by 2
y = 13/2

so the answer is y=13/2 or y = 6.5 if you want the answer given in decimal

note that whatever you do to one side of the equation you must also do to the other side, you can do these things as much as you want to attempt to get the one side equal to just y

5y - 8 = 3y + 5
> 5y - 3y = 5 + 8
> 2y = 13
> y = 13/2

5y-8+8=3y+5+8
5y=3y+13
5y-3y=13+3y-3y
2y=13
y=13/2=6 1/2

5y - 8 = 3y + 5

5y - 8 - 3y = 3y + 5 - 3y

2y - 8 = 5

2y - 8 + 8 = 5 + 8

2y = 13

2y / 2 = 13 / 2

y = 6 1/2

y = 6.5

Subtract 3y from both sides:
2y-8=5

Add 8 from both sides:
2y=13

Divide 2 from both sides:
y=13/2

Check:
5(13/2)-8=3(13/2)+5
65/2-16/2=39/2+10/2
49/2=49/2

I hope this helps!

you need to put the y's on one side and the constants on the other side in order to solve for y

so 5y -3y - 8 = 5
so 2y-8=5
2y = 5 +8
2y=13
y = 13/5
