Legato: Word to indicate that the movement or entire composition is to be played smoothly.

They mean the same thing. Legato is Italian and it means to play smoothly meaning there should be no silence between notes. In other words the notes should be connected.

If you go to the "audio sample" section on this page you can hear the difference.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legato

By definition, Legato is an Italian word used to describe a smooth, continuous note without any perceptible breakages.

Legato is a musical term used as an indication for the movement or entire composition to be played smoothly. Thus the musical notes that are connected and smooth are known as legato. In Italian it means to be “tied” or “bound together”. Legato is the opposite of Staccato. Legato is played without a perceptible pause or intervening silence in between the notes.

Legato - that means you're supposed to link the notes. Play smoothly is simply telling you to play smoothly, softly.

Legato- you want to hold the notes for the full value. Think LaaLaaLaaa with no spaces in between.

To help...the opposite is Staccato - think "Ti ti ti ti" or very short and seperated.
