males have prettier colors with longer fins.

More and more females are being bred to be as bright and colorful as the males. They do tend to be smaller, and the fins on the males do tend to be longer. However, I've seen some very BRIGHT colored females, so don't juge by color alone.

And NEVER put two bettas, male or female together. Some ppl can keep females together in VERY large tanks, but several attempts to keep multiple females togther have ended in the death of one or more of the females. Males and females will fight, and even experienced breeder sometimes loose one or both fish during spawning.

don't look at length of tail, you can get short tailed males aka plakats. females only have short tails.
and as for colours, i've seen some amazingly coloured females, from selective breeding some really stunning girls have appeared. look at the links below, gorgeous! females sometimes have fat tummies like that which means they're eggy.

there are two ways to sex:
1. females will have an oviposter, a little white spot on their tummy, 99% of the time they will, crossdressers have been known!
2. males have pointyer anal fins than females.

Male fish tend to have much longer, flowing back fins than females. Also, most male betas are blue, most females are red.

Male betta fish are the ones with long flowing tails/fins. Female betta fish are much more plain, short tails, not fancy colors. Multiple females can be in a tank at the same time, with or without a male. Only one male per tank, or they will fight.
