Getting a G.E.D. is just another piece of paper that "recognizes" your course of study (and yes, you will have to study and pass exams the same as if you were back in school) and it says that you've completed the course satisfactorily.
Call either your local library and ask for help or call your school and they'll give you instrucions.
Good Luck and don't let yourself be discouraged along the way. Having THIS may well open a few more door for you.

http://search.nysed.gov/search?q=G.E.D.&btnG=Search+EMSC&site=EMSC&client=EMSC&proxystylesheet=EMSC&output=xml_no_dtd This is the site for New York State General Education Degree information. G.E.D. can have different meanings in different states . This may help you find the information for your state which you did not mention in your question. It is a test you take requiring a certain score which indicates you have the equivalent of a high school education but not a high school diploma.

This site is for the state of California which has a general equivalency diploma. This may also give you some helpful information even if you don't live in California.

General Education Diploma. Contact your local high school/community college/social services department for the details in your area. Usually you will have to attend classes and then take the test. Perhaps you should consider going back to school?

A GED is a General Education Diploma, and is considered the adult equivalent of a high school diploma. If you talk with your local board of education or adult education department they can usually tell you how to get one (it usually involves night school).
