The first two books were written in different versions because the publishers were afraid the American population would reject British slang. However, it was learned quickly that the Americans don't care if 'lift' is used in place of 'elevator' and the remaining books were all printed in the same version.

They just fix some of the british slang so that americans still understand whats going on. I dont htink its neccisary but thats what they do. Thats how the title of the first book got changed...it was Philospher's Stone in England and Sorcer's Stone in the US. They thought that the US audience wouldn't get the meaning of philosphers stone and think it had something to do with philosphy instead of magic and alchemy

Well in the US the Sorcerers Stone in the UK is called the Philosophers Stone, and they have different covers.
