In the UK the greatest percentage of cost is tax. The UK driver pays more for fuel than any other European country. Americans almost get fuel for free. In the UK diesel is more expensive then petrol. In the UK when diesel vehicles became more common, the price of diesel overtook the price of petrol. The reason for high cost is because drivers are being mugged by government. Taxing fuel provides guaranteed revenue for government to waste upon targets and policies.
In France fuel is cheaper than in the UK and road tax is included in the price at the pump! In France where diesels outnumber petrol vehicles, diesel fuel is considerably cheaper than petrol. Buying fuel in Spain and Portugal is much cheaper.
Try Gibraltar ... its British but fuel is so cheap compared to the UK.

petrol was initially an unwanted bi product of oil cracking which someone devised a use for. almost all the cost is taxation as already stated in great detail by other contributers. if the government ever lost the revenue from fuels it would suffer total financial breakdown instantly.

Because we are all to lazy to walk or take the bus for a week ! if everyone did that ,the losses of the allmighty doller , to the oil companies would drive down the the price of fuel ! No demand , no profit , then these greedy pricks, would feel the pinch like we do!

because they are raising the cost of a barrell of oil.i know ,its stupid, but what can we do,if we want to drive.i always said,if everyone would get their tanks filled up and dont buy gas for a week or so,then thet would lower the price, but you know as well as me,people arent going to do that.
