Are you talking a valid IQ test or a standardized IQ test?

A valid test is administered by a psychologist to children under 18 years. IQ means intelligence quotient, that is a ratio. the denominator is the actual age and the numerator is a measured of attained mental ability. tasks are used instead of "questions". The tasks are "age graded", that is originally groups of normal ability children were observed to see which ones they could complete. So if a child can do a task rated at 12 year old level, but has an age of 10, then the IQ is 120 (figured as a percentage). The maximum mental score would be to complete a task that is age graded at 18 years. A traditional test cannot verify the genius level of either older children or adults.

A standardized test is based on questions. The raw score obtained is calibrated against average results taken from normal children, adjusted for age in both cases. Statisticians have determined that results taken from a large sample of groups replicate a Gaussian random event curve, so a theoretical mathematical score can be derived for adults. However the standardization process accuracy falls apart for both the high and low end of results, and the statistical certainty for a score of 200 is extremely poor. Remember 200 does not mean twice as good as 100, but rather a one in a million chance.

It depends on the test and at what age you take the test at.

As for adult intelligence scales...

Stanford Binet - 166+
Wechsler - 160+
Ravens APM - 153+

There are many tests that are considered 'high range' that can test to the range of about 190...however, their validity is questionable.

you must be thinking of the Stanford-Binet. the final score is the result of correct responses plus the psychologist's evaluation. at some point, "scores" turn into words, such as dull, and genuis. so at days end, there really is no highest score.

not sure, but i know that over 150 is considered genious, and 90-100 is about average.
