The VERY best way is to find a friend or local crafter in the area who knows how to knit and take a few lessons. That way they can tell you what you're doing right/wrong and help you if you have problems. The next best thing is to use http://knittinghelp.com which has excellent videos on everything from beginning to end, plus free patterns.

A couple more pointers: Start with knitting needles US size 8-10 or 5-6 mm in Europe. Also use a worsted weight cheap acrylic yarn in a light color. That way it's easier to see your stitches and the project will come apart easily for you to reuse the yarn while you're learning.

Don't expect the very first time out you're going to make something great. But after only a little practice you can make a simple scarf (knit every row) or even sew a bunch of "scarves" together to make an afghan!

Good luck!

My favorite book for beginners is "the Knit Stitch" by Sally Melville. The directions are nice and clear, the pics are great, and all of the patterns use the basic knit stitch. I have only been knitting for about a year and a half... one of my first projects was a sweater out of that book and it turned out AWESOME!!! She has two other books that build on the skills in the first. As a side... any better yarn store is more than welcoming to new knitters and they usually have a "Stitch and Sqwak" Night where you can meet other knitters and get basic help! Get knittin'!

If you put in " knitting how to video" There are great videos online showing you how to do it. They really help because you can actually SEE it in action.
