boot from the cd when you start the pc, F12 on dells but it should give you a list of setup/boot commands before xp loads
anyways, backup any data you want to keep 1st, boot from cd, delete xp partition and install 2000 to that partition

Unfortunately. I do not think any of the previous answers are workable.
You need to wipe the drive first since Win2k will not install on a system that already has XP ( as you noticed ).
goto bootdisk.com and get a floppy or CD ISO image that has fdisk and format ( win 98 or newer ) or get the Hard drive diagnostics utility for the hard drive and use the Wipe disk option, or there may be a wipe drive utility on bootdisk.com.
Does it even have a floppy drive ?
If not, then you will need to create a botable CD with the proper programs on it.

Reboot the computer with the disc in the drive. Then when it asks you if you want to boot from CD, hit a button. Then it will allow you to install 2000 on it.

insert the disk reboot and let it boot off the cd then choose format and install windows that wipes the hard disk clean and install another OS in your case win2000

if the disk you have is a BOOT DISK, you need to reboot your computer with the BOOT disk inside the computer CD, and if it ask you TO BOOT FROM CD PRESS ANY KEY, and press any key and then you can totally rebuild your operating system, need further help email me and we can talk by phone and I will help you do this

Change your cmos setting to boot exclusively from CD ( or floppy), then issue a complete hard drive format command.

my suggestion is to copy the format file from xp and boot up in the floppy drive then after you have cleaned up your hd, boot again with the cd.. if this doesnt work let me know.
