Explain to me how these tickets work. The one I am looking at is a 2 day base ticket with Fast Pass?

They came in a lot of flavors. The base ticket allow entry into one single park per day. If you want to go to two parks in one day you need two tickets. But that same ticket will allow one park each day.

You should buy the "UNOFFICIAL GUIDE TO WALT DISNEY WORLD" It is a paper back that will cost about $20 but will save you a lot more. It answers about every question that you can come up with. Tickets, hotels inside and outside the park, restaurants inside and outside. Transportation, a little bit of everything. It will save you money and headaches.

Fast Pass tickets are available to anyone for no extra charge. They help you skip through long lines. Did you mean park hopper option instead? The park hopper option allows you to visit more than 1 Disney park in a single day. For example, say you start your morning off at the Disney Studios. By mid day, you're ready for something new. With the park hopper, you can visit any other Disney park (or all 4) in that day.
Base tickets allow you to visit only 1 Disney park per day. So for example, if you have a 1 day base ticket and you use it for the Magic Kingdom, you can leave for dinner, naps, etc... but you can only return to the Magic Kingdom later that day.
The next day, you have the same choice all over again. You have a 1 day base ticket, but have to choose which park you'll spend the entire day in.
Does this make sense?

Yup. Base tickets are good for one park per day, so you pick which park you want to go to for Day One and Day Two, and it can be the same park both days or two different parks. Just bear in mind that you need a Park Hopper ticket if you want to be able to do more than one theme park per day. FAST Passes are different. If an attraction offers a FAST pass, all you do is walk up to the FAST pass booth and put your ticket in. The machine will spit out your ticket and a FAST Pass that gives you a one-hour window where you can return to the ride and get in the FAST Pass line (usually 5 minute wait or less). You can only get one or two FAST Passes at a time though, so look at your FAST Pass when you get it -- at the bottom it tells you when you can get another one.
