I have an 2002 Trailblazer, and I just got a K&N Air Filter for it. It is one of the round filters, and I wanted to know if I need to put the airfilter cover back on... When its all the way screwed on its got gaps on the side where air can flow in, and one air entrance in the front that is kind of blocked by the grill and other things. Could I get by with just leaving the cover off, that way it lets more air in? It is kind of set up like a cold air intake kit also...

depends on how the air is routed - the housing can be restrictive but it can also be a source of designed turbulance for better flow

if the K&N is a replacement filter keep it
if it is a filter 'kit' leave it off

I wonder if you have the right kit for your vehicle.
As i use K&N on all my vehicles, they have all fit tight and with the cover on make an even tighter contact.
Don't ever run with out a filter, besides the dust that enters, there is also the chance of a fire, from a backfire.

The cover is there to prevent damage to the otherwise fragile paper filter.

Without the cover the filter element is exposed to elements like small rocks, pebbles, sticks, sand, grit, water, oil, and other liquids.
