I was 2 cm dilated on a Monday lost mucous plug that Friday and had my baby on that Sunday! They never told me how effaced I was though.
Baby should be coming soon, it could take a day or a couple weeks! It is so unpredictable at this point because everyone labors differently. Just relax, walk around a lot if you want to speed up the process. And don't rush to the hospital the second you start to feel a pain, wait until they are steady contractions...if you have ANY concerns call your doctor!

What you didn't state was when your due date was. If it has already passed then they should be scheduling you for an induction. If it has not passed then my best guess will be 2-3 days tops before you are going in to have your baby.
Someone said have sex and that is the best medicine. I know that you are probably not up to it, but there is a certain chemical in semen that can induce the labor and make it come faster for ya. Also, walking will help to bring your child down further into the birth canal.
Good luck and congrats!!

If this is your first baby, I would say you have some time left. 1 cm and 40% effaced is nothing. You can be dilated for several weeks before delivery. Hang in there.

It's different for everyone. You could be that for the next 2 weeks or you could have your baby tomorrow. Only your baby can decide when he/she wants to come. I was dilating for 3 weeks before I had my baby. I was almost 3cm and 80%effaced when my doctor stripped my membranes and my son came out (very quickly might I add) 3 days later. Good Luck!!

well lets just say that my cervix has been completely thinned out, 1 cm dilated with the baby at -1 station for 2 weeks now...so you may have some time or you could magically go into labor tonight...it's all a waiting game and it sucks, I am about to be overdue as of saturday.

sorry i was like that at 34-35 weeks and didn't go into labor until 37. my sister was 1 cm for almost a month-even her dr had told her that she was going to go early (she ended up being one week late-induced)
there is no way to know but make sure everything is all set and done so when you do go you'll have less to worry about.
also the more your body does now, the less it has to do when you are in active labor.
good luck

Sorry to disappoint you, but this means nothing. Some women go several weeks or more being 1cm, especially if this is your first baby. We don't know how long it took you to get to 1cm, it could have taken weeks for that to happen. Until you start having STRONG contractions at regular intervals, 2-3 minutes apart or if your water breaks, nothing exciting is going to happen. I'm an OB nurse and sometimes moms go home dilated to 4cm and it still takes several days. Sorry, but good luck.
