You can be gripping ot wrong, or accidently pinching it, or giving him a blister or something.
Ask him to guide you. Have him place your hand on him...like he likes it, with his hand over yours, guiding you.

this is simple....have him show you....he should do it while you watch, then put your hand on his and learn the motion. Make sure he tells you when it feels good.
