I have a laptop with windows 98 and a desk computer with windows xp. I want to update the laptop, but it is not urgent. Do you think I should wait for potential problems in vista to be addressed by microsoft?

Definitely hold off for a few months (AT LEAST). The Vista launch has opened up a whole new bag of worms, very similar to the issues faced with XP - ie: software and hardware problems.

These do not include the certain security vulnerabilities that will arise.

Don't rush into Vista - let it plant its feet in the world of operating systems and then make the move. I've had to troubleshoot several PCs with Vista on them already and many times the solution was simply that these users had to wait until certain programs/hardware were updated for Vista compatibility.

I would wait until after service pack one is released in the fall before buying Vista. If I had to buy a new computer now, I would get Vista Home Premium installed.

You are running Win 98 on your laptop. It is probably too old to run Vista. It will run very slow if at all.

Run Vista upgrade Advisor. It will test your hardware and software.

Often an older laptop video is not up to Vista requirements and because the graphics board is part of the main board, it can not be upgraded.

If I were you, I'd wait - there is no rush as other Win versions work quite well. 98 [though 98 is not compatible with certain programs anymore nor can it be used for high speed internet through cable] XP is still great.

Vista has a number of 'issues' that many are really complaining about, and as usual, Microsoft has 'screwed' up again and will need to do a lot of patch work and fixing before it's user friendly...like ETERNAL NON STOP asking you to allow or disallow certain functions...pain in the royal neck! And if disable it, then you have NO protection.

Also upgrading to Vista can cost you more than you'd think....and it alone is costly - systems already loaded seem to work b etter, but still not worth it right now as I see it

I just bought a laptop last month with Vista on it and I have had absolutely no problems. From what I have heard most of the problems come from trying to upgrade your computer. If you do get a new computer make sure you get a better than average one so that I can run Vista properly

Vista already has tons of bugs...Microsoft is actually ALREADY working on Service Pack 1 for it. I would wait AT LEAST until that comes out before upgrading.

I am doubtful that Vista will even run on the computer that has 98 on it because of the hardware requirements of Vista.

Lol, you will not be able to update that laptop running Windows 98 to Vista. Perhaps you should take a look at the requirements for a computer running Vista. http://www.microsoft.com/Vista

Most computers available in the stores now have Vista. I have heard from a lot of people with new computers that the software they use is not compatible with Vista. Many companies have not updated their software and drivers to work with this new OS...maybe because of the uncertainty of launch date? You may find your printer is not compatible, etc. You might want to check into this before making a purchase.

If your laptop is running 98, odds are it doesn't have the power to run vista. I would be very sure about the system reqs. before you install. Other than that, I would wait for the first service pack. MS likes to release stuff before it's any good.

Aloha from Down Unda!

It all depends on your needs, budget & 'inclinations'. It seems to me that Vista is geared for power hungry gaming graphics & the rich.

The features of XP (Home) seem to be more than adequate for my own use without spending more money & effort. Hence, Vista will only be incorporated when this 'old' three year old system begins to fail. Happily, there is no sign of wear & tear yet!

Have fun & best wishes,

Like everyone else is saying wait for the first Service Pack or if you are a gamer and the game is only on vista then you upgrade.
