A young adult is in the stage between adolescence and mature adulthood, roughly ages 18 to 25.

From about 18 up to 21 but also some years after. Young adult is mostly used to state somebodies social status.

You would hardly call a 20 year old father of 3, and president of his own company a young adult.

However 25 and living with his parents and a paper route as a job, trying to get his own place... That finally is becoming one.
