Openoffice is free, but is rubbish. We have MS Office for word and excel at work, plus several openoffice licences to reduce costs.
They do not talk to each other very well at all, the formats go all over the place.

If you are a student, then MS Office is quite cheap, it is greatly reduced for students - don't know how you prove it, or claim the reduction though.

P.S., please ignore the idiotic thumbs down above, everyone who says they come with Microsoft Office are telling the truth.

You need both. They are totally different applications.
You can buy Microsoft Office Students Edition for about $15 more than only buyingonly Excel or Word.

You can get Open Office which is compatible with all Microsoft Office applications for free.

Buing Microsoft Office you can get both of them. You cannot have any free programs of Microsoft from net.

After buying MS Office, they inform you to install them.

Another question is if MS programs are the only alternatives.

Office.org
I have used this for six month, with no problems
and it is free.
It is not up to microsoft office standard, but if you are
using it for the basics ie: letter, envelopes, or basics
maths, then this is good enough.

This is their site

Just go to the download page & try it out, will save ££/$$
