My boyfriend has bipolar disorder and adult ADHD. He lives in cycles, and when he is up he gets hypersexual. I think this is great and encourage it! However, he always gets so ill afterwards, very depressed, finds it difficult to turn off, and sometimes gets into trouble, I don't know what kind of trouble. . Can anyone explain hypersexuality to me properly, and tell me if in encouraging my boyfriend to be sexual with me I am in fact making him dangerous, or dangerously ill? Thankyou.

Well I'm bipolar and have a form of ADHD as well and I must say... I'm ALWAYS Hypersexual. No exception, I think what people would call Nymphomanic. Doesn't matter when I'm down or up; I actually love it more when I'm down... you know, because of the hormones it releases in the brain, like... make you happy an' all. I've never felt worse afterwards, and definitely never get into trouble because of it... I more likely get into trouble if I lack it. In fact, when I'm in a depressive phase, I get even worse than I normally am... and I'm normally above average.

But I do suppose it depends from one person to another. You cannot expect two people with a different genetical make-up, a different gender, but with the same mental illnesses, to experience the symptoms the same way. I'm always hypersexual with no exception, although the rest of my life is mainly ruled by cycles. Not oddly enough even by cycles of the moon or by lunar eclipses. That's not really surprising knowing that I am female, after all.

I suggest he'd better work out, or the two of you, if the hypersexuality is actually the cause of his feeling down and getting into trouble, or not something completely different, which can also be related to the hypersexuality and the actual act of intercourse. And then take further steps from there.

(to Nina - no offence, but I resent that remark. I realise it's not easy for someone who is mentally completely healthy to go out with someone who is bipolar, but bipolar people need love as well you know! If you're going out with someone who is bipolar and you can't handle it, remember it's you who has to change your ways because they cannot help it!)

It's part of the mania phase of manic-depression / bipolar disorder. You're not making it worse by encouraging it. Enjoy it! He will get highs and lows anyway, don't ever think that you should suppress the highs for fear of 'making things worse'. The highs and hypersexuality kinda compensate for the lows. But if you're worried about just how low he gets the rest of the time, I'd seek professional advice if you're not already doing so.

Hypersexuality is a common symptom of Bipolar Disorder. People become uninhibited and charming and crave enormous amounts of sex.
As you've noticed it can be lot of fun which is why many BPD people avoid treatment.
BPD can get worse and there is a real chance he may become hypersexual with other women. You should contact a doctor.
You're not making him ill he is already. Get some help.

All answers are good, but with bi-polar one of the keys to treatment is predicting cycles and trying to maintain an even keel. What can happen is people often exhaust themselves in the manic phase which contributes to the following crash and the depressed cycle.

You aren't making him dangerous or dangerously ill, but teaching him to notice the patterns would prob be better than encouraging him to have intense sessions. Hope this helps!

If you asked this 5 or more times already, my diagnosis is that you both should go get help. I mean who dates a bipolar in the first place?
I donna bout you, but dating a normal guy can be a handful at times, what about one who suffers from episodes?
He definitelly needs to be taking his medication, this is not even funny girlfriend.

Hope that helps,
-N.
