According to the directions for mine, they say the higher the better. Mine has a suction cup attachment that I use to mount it behind the mirror. I'm sure the dash is almost as good. I wish I would have gotten a Valentine One detector. They will tell you the direction the radar is coming from and also how many radar signals it is receiving. That is good if there are two cops with their radar on, say one down the road a 1/4 mile past the other one. It's a way to trap you.

I have mine mounted above my rear view mirror, I ran a hot wire up the side of my windshield, tucking it behind the plastic molding, made a bracket that slid into the top molding, aimed it out the front, so there are no obstructions, and is less conspicuous to the out side.

remember that they are illegal in some states...

the best place is on the dash board.... don't put it on your windshield or hanging from the rearview mirror because you could get a ticket for obstructing your own view forward...
