the fan i want to quieten is the power supply fan. Ive been told that its difficult, dangerous and EXPENSIVE to change. I am a student so have little money to spend on it.

Your PC will not reduce the Noise even if you reduce the clockspeed of the CPU as the noise is comming from the Fans that is in you machine not on the CPU.What you need to do is invest in good quality CPU Fan and Power Supply that have an excelent/quiet fan. You can also check for case that have a good sound proof material.

Anyway, if you still want to lower your CPU speed (even if it will not help with your noise problem) then check/ play with the bus speed and the multiplier. Your motherboard manual should have an instruction on how to do it. If you don't have your manual, try to get it from their website or include your motherboard model here so we can tell you exactly where to go.

Good Luck!

I dont think "underclocking" is the answer here. Usually what generates the noise is the cooling system. If you want to have less noise change to quiter fans! With fast processors cooling is a big issue and many mfgs use less than the best fans to save a few bucks.

do you have the old 90nm prescott p4 ? those cpu's make a lot of heat and need high rpm fans to cool it down. a friend had a 3 ghz p4 cpu and the noise his computer was making resembled a vacuum cleaner. he changed the cpu cooler, without much succes on reducing the noise.

That won't help because the noise is coming from the fans...you will have to lower the fan speed, or buy another fan that is quieter.

That won;t help, if anything it;ll make it louder....

if its loud you need to address that...too many fans? bad fans? over active CD drive? theres stuff you can do but sound is mechanical and slowing down your system will maike it louder cause it has to work harder...
