Rewash it. Add a cup of white vingar to the wash. Vinegar deodorizes, works as a fabric softener and kills mold/mildew.

You may have to rewash it a few more times & use a liquid softener. They now have Tide w/Febreeze in it & maybe that would eliminate the odor. If it's possible to hang the comforter outside on a clothesline, that would help air it out as well.

Wash it again, Use color-safe bleach (oxygen based bleach).
If that doesn't work, wash it a 3rd time with just a little bit of chlorine bleach (about 1/8 cup).
If the colors are already faded, then use 1/4 to 1/2 C of bleach.

rewash it - 2 times with your normal laundry detergent - wash it in hot water both times and add your fabric softener at the end of the second wash - then immediately dry it thoroughly- this should take care of the smell.

rewash in hot water, several times. i did that once and it took two washings before the smell went away. if that doesn't work, you can try the dry cleaners.
