A few months ago I had a new thermostat & all new hoses put in because it was actually overheating. At that time it was overheating when on the highway, but cooling off when I was driving slow or stop & go. Now my gauge will be in the red line, but it isn't actually overheating (no boiling, steaming, etc). There is no loss of coolant. It has also at times warmed up quickly & then cooled back down (to below normal running temp) very quickly according to my gauge. Any ideas about what it could be? Much thanks...

Could be air trapped in the system still. After a few months, this should have bled off, but along with a thermostat, the only other thing I could see causing this is air. Try running it with the cap off and a thermometer in the radiator (obviously don't drive it, just idle until it warms up). Compare findings with the gauge. If they seem to coincide, you probably have a bad or incorrectly installed thermostat. Otherwise, there is air in the system or a sensor problem.

Seems like you'd still have a leaking tube, even the smallest leak will play games with you and it'll over heat a lot of the times, and it's just even a small drip, or you have a bad ground wire to your heat sensor...

It appears that your gauge or the temperature sensor is bad. Have a mechanic check it for you and they should be able to tell you exactly what is wrong.

Sounds like one of the sensors to me. My 94 Jeep had the same things happening. I had O2 sensors, heat sensors, you name it, replaced. I loved that old beast, but I finally had to give her up since I couldn't afford the upkeep anymore.

Sounds like a faulty thermostat.

Best guess would be the heat sending unit in block of engine. replace and see what happens they aren't expensive.
