A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so
many others her age, she considered herself to be a liberal Democrat,
and among other liberal ideals, was in favor of higher taxes
to support more government programs, in other words, redistribution of
wealth.

She was ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican,
a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had
participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt
that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep
what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher
taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. The
self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the
truth of course, and, that is what all the media said too, so it must
be true and she indicated so to her father.

He responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and
let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was
taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which
left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She
didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many
college friends
because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, "How is your friend Audrey doing ?"
She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy
classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA, even though
she gets other people to help her all the time. She is so popular on
campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to
all the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes
because she's too hung over."

Her wise father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's
office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your
friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and
certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired
back, "That's a crazy idea, how would that be fair! I've worked really
hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard
work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played
while I worked my tail off!"

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently,

"Welcome to the Republican party."

You may have to shorten the story, you know the liberals have a very short attention span!

I think your scenerio is oversimplistic and is faulty in it's reasoning. Grades are not like money. And, the fact that one person doesn't study as hard and makes a 'C' average as opposed to an "A" average by someone who works hard is already justice.
And, it has nothing to do with welfare. The person making the A average is going to be awarded with a better career position and career offers. The C student won't.
Just like a person who has entitlements in the form of sucking off his or her paren'ts bank account while in college will have advantages that a person who has to attend community college because they can't afford to go to a top university right out of college because the parents don't have the money.
Just remember, what we have now is a form of social engineering and a form of redistribution of wealth. It's a trickle up system as it stands. The wealth is being redistributed to the wealthiest 1% in our country through tax write offs and kickbacks. While the middle class are seeing less and less of their pay checks. The poor are getting their services cut despite the danger of many families falling through the cracks of the economic safety net. Housing is extremely expensive and working families with 2 parents working full time is no longer enough in many cases. I'll never be a republican. It means that you are heartless and absolutely don't understand the meaning of democracy. It also means that you think you are entitled to more off the backs of the middle class simply because you make more. That isn't right. We need a tax system based on 1950's standards, not GWB 2007 standards where the middle class is getting more and more ripped off.

I am not a diehard Democrat, but I am definately not a diehard Repulbican either. People just need to make the best choice for our country, not based on the party..

I like it. And this does apply to taxes. Someone convince me a progressive tax rate is fair. I worked my butt off to get where I'm out, nobody gave me anything, and now the government is falling all over itself to take away a huge chunk what I've earned. Who decides what's fair. D.C. idiots. I don't care if you're Republican or a Democrat. They take too much!

Everyone Star this, this should be best question of the day on the front page. I dont understand why people dont understange that wealth redistribution is the same as punishing the people who are successfull and educated. I cannot believe so many people fight to help the lazy, the uneducated and the criminals (and dont forget the terrorists). You liberals are destroying my country.

Seriousely I am going to remember this story forever and repeat it 1 thousand times.

A very simplistic example of what is what, but sadly, some still can't even understand it. Truly a shame.
