I was wondering if anyone knew of a site where I can go to learn the game of Go. I am a complete begginer so I would like a site where I can learn and maybe play a computer till I learn the basics. Then I can find other begginers to play with. Also, if you know any books that are exceptionally helpfull I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Oooh, I love go!
There's a pretty thorough explanation of the rules with some helpful pictures here: http://playgo.to/interactive/
I don't know about playing a computer, but go is available on Yahoo! Games. If you go in and ask for someone to play a teaching game with you, I'm sure they'll oblige. That's how I learned. Good luck!

The Interactive Way to Go that Telltale Muffin mentioned is the best tutorial on the web that I know of. I would go through that before moving on to Go Problems.com. Dragon Go Server is the best turn-based site for go, but I prefer live play. For that, the best (particularly for beginners) is still Kiseido Go Server. Lots of helpful people there. The interface can also be used as an editor, so you can go over your games or even have a stronger player review them. Also, KGS has a little bit of freeware called igowin. It's a 9x9 game you play against the computer.

Of course the best way to experience the game is in person. Try the American Go Association site. There are clubs listed in most of the 50 states. It's worth a shot at least.

For a beginning go book, I think Kaoru Iwamoto's "Go for Beginners" is my favorite, though Cho Chikuns "Go: A Complete Introduction to the Game" and Matthews' "Teach Yourself Go" are also good. The AGA has a list (link supplied).

I'm Maxdwolf on Kiseido and Dragon as well and always willing to give a teaching game if time allows.

--www.goproblems.com--is a good place to learn how to play Go.

Once you have a handle on the game go to --www.dragongoserver.net-- which is a "play by e-mail" service, the much slower pace is really helpfull for beginners to learn because you don't have to finish a whole game in one sitting. (Gives you time to study the board before committing your stone.)

You can play it here on Yahoo! Games:

http://games.yahoo.com/play/go&ss=1

There are different levels and you can score points and join the rankings. My friend played on this site all day at work for weeks and became really good :D

Good luck!
