Its all to do with prime factors:
prime factors of 12 = 2*2*3
prime factors of 18=2*3*3
the highest common factor is the number with the greatest number of prime factors common to both numbers (ie 2*3 = 6)
the lowest common multiple is the number that includes all of the prime factors from both numbers (ie 2*2*3*3 = 36)
