With all dogs, I would opt for leather as it doesn't hold the hair or the dirt - as for kids; I haven't got any so can't comment.

It depends on how much you spend I think.
Leather would wipe clean easier - but would indeed scratch with the dog.
My parents bought a cheap leather suite, and it looked crap very quickly.
We bought a quite expension "cream!!!" fabric suite, and have 3 kids, 2 cats, and had at the time a dog as well (sadly passed away now). It still looks very good, and we have had it for about 8 years.
It has scotchguard, plus we just wash all the covers in the washing machine, on cold - without detergent.

Leather - easier to keep clean
doesn't absorb smells, hairs brush off easily
Will get scratched by dog's claws - get an exta fabric chair especially for the dog or put a cover on the sofa for him. Trim his claws if necessary

I have three children and used to have fabric but switched to leather and I wouldnt have anything else now. To be honest a darker suite is probably better with children but I find mine very easy to keep clean, you just use Lux in warm water and use the foam with a sponge to clean the suite. I found fabric much harder to keep clean. I have to be honest if your dogs claws are long the could scratch the couch but maybe you could use a blanket on part where you allow your dog to sit? We just bring our dogs bed in for our dog so it doesnt jump up.

Leather is easier to keep clean with kids and we have a cat and she hasn't scratched ours.
I had my dads dog while he was in hospital and he didn't scratch it either his claws are cut regularly
You can just wipe it down with a cloth if something gets spilled on it.
I used to have a fabric one but it was hard to keep clean and the hairs were harder to get off.

If your hubby is anything like me, then buy fabric........All leather and artificial sofa's that i have sat on for more than 10 Min's draws and makes me sweat terrible.......Besides they may be easier to keep clean but 1 catch by something sharp and your sofas unrepairable...You can dry clean fabric every so often...............NO. NO. NOT LEATHER...Please

If you get Leather, buy one with re-coverable cushions etc.
If you buy a fabric one, buy one with removeable, washable covers.
Leather is more expensive but will last longer.
Fabric is cheaper so can be replaced easier.
