As a Firefighter my self this question hits close to home. My initial instinct would to say of course Firefighters are underpaid stating reasons such as the risk, importance and relevance to community. I, maybe more than the average person, understand that Firefighters do much more than “put the wet stuff on the red stuff”. They are highly trained professionals that have a very high degree of dedication for what they do. Firefighters are now responsible for medical, service, rescue and many other types of calls each requiring their own level of training. Firefighters are often required to work overtime on the big ones and filling in during the times of need.
However, my economics background must stray from the norm on this question and say actually, no they are not. In the U.S., unless the wage is artificially increased by minimum wage, salaries and wages are determined by the supply and demand of the market. If any sector of the work force is truly “underpaid” then there would be few or no workers to actually do these jobs and/or a high turnover rate based on the workers finding better paying work. Firefighters put in hundreds of hours of training and the turnover rate is relatively low due to changing jobs (not taking into account those that change due to physical reasons such as injury). Also, job opportunities in fire departments are often met with more than enough applicants for the job. Economically, this tells us that Firefighters in general are paid what the market demands. Some Firefighters do climb the ladder for better pay and some do leave the service because of pay but in general the market is fairly saturated with workers. If/when departments in a particular area have a hard time finding applicants for positions is when you will have a situation in which they can be said to be underpaid.
Do Firefighters want more for what they do? Of course! Do they deserve more for what they do? Of course! Is the pay the only reason they do what they do? Of course NOT!
…so that others may live.

Yes and No from my opinion $38,213 per year rounded down to 38,000 per year is only about $3600 Roughly a month it's sort of a good income but just above poverty. In my opinion they seem under paid because they risk their lives every time they walk in a burning building. But they do this for the community to help out you must always remeber that .

Yes, they're underpaid. Absolutely. You're talking about a profession whose members run into buildings while everyone else runs out.
Meanwhile, you have school superintendents who make twice as much for sitting at a desk.

My niece's hubby is a hearth fighter. contained in the perfect week or 2 he has been stated as out on innumerable hoax calls and had rockets fired on the vehicle, placed out a planned hearth in a row of derelict, terraced residences even as idiots threw bottles and garbage on the hearth warring parties, and dealt with burning burning autos even as the fools who likely pinched them contained in the first position jeered and drank beer. can we supply them sufficient recognize? of route some in our community do no longer. Why do workers could wrestle for each measly pay upward thrust? because politicians take income of people's reliable will to furnish facilities at the low priced and ultimately hit upon a fashion for someone to make a income from it.

Yes all big city firefighters and police are underpaid. They take a chance every day that they will lose their lives.

Yes they are under paid just like teachers. I think it would be wonderful if we could get people to put a price value on teacher's, police and firefighters comparable to that of actors and sport personalities. I think that actors and sport personalities are grossly over paid for what they give to society.
