I am seriously thinking of voting for the SNP at the upcoming Scottish election (SNP 1st ballot, Green on the list), but only because I think we need a change of administration for a time, which will hopefully give Labour and the Lib/Dems the kick in the pants they need to get their priorities right, and also because I think the SNP may be more conducive to do a deal with the Greens to form an executive (assuming the Greens get enough seats).
Like the questioner, I do worry about the SNP front bench team though. They don't seem to be a particularly competent group of people.
I don't think we need worry about the SNP controlling a completely independent Scotland quite yet though. The constitution, and therefore Scottish Independence, is an issue entirely under the remit of the UK Parliament, and not something the Scottish Parliament can do anything about except have debates and referendums. So in order for Scotland to gain Independence, The UK government would have to be sympathetic to the SNP cause, and I can't see that happening in the near future.

Yes I think they are. They have been doing a grand job running the UK for as long as anyone can remember probably as far back as when they took over England. (Remember that it was the King of Scots who took over England!)
On a more serious note, the same question was asked about Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is now a sucessful liberal democracy with a higher standard of living than the UK, better education, better health services, a higher GDP/C and generally happier people. It took the next door neighbour a while to emerge from the shadows but this was in part because of the rancour of the independence war and subsequent years. A constitutional separation of Scotland from England would most probably be better managed (by the Scottish dominated civil service) so Scotland would be in better stead.
And if Scotland were independent, the SNP would loose its reason to be. There are many who vote for them because they want independence and if it were granted, these electors would no longer need to vote SNP. Again, Ireland gives a direct corollary. Sinn Fein won a landslde in the seats whcih were later part of the Republic in the elections to the House of Commons. In the first elections to Dail Eireann under the Irish Free State, the party was effectively no longer a force, factions having risen, split and opposed each other.

Hello Paul I think you are going to get shot down in flames over this one. Just wait for the backlash.... the English are to blame for this and the English did that blahde..blahde blah.
I think you are completely right in what you say about the SNP they have to learn to stop hating not only the English but also their own countrymen if they are to stand even the slightest chance of even getting elected never mind governing the Scottish People.
I appreciate that many many Scots would like to see Scotland have self rule but at what cost to the economy of Scotland and it's people.
And yes Whining and complaining is a national a past time easy to blame it on others like the Auld enemy England and not so easily swallowed when aimed on the hame front.
I would disgaree that you are not that good there is some great talent out there, but for goodness sake a good days work for a good days wage. The Calvanist would turn in their graves if they saw the apathy and the something for nothing culture that exists.
Even the Football team have caught the disease of 'loads of money' which equals apathy. The team has no fire in their bellies.

"You act like the people you live with" and as we have had to put up with the English moaning for years then it may have rubbed off on some.
It is the English who moan about everything
the Muslim community,
The Government that they voted in,
The Polish migrant workers,
George Bush,
The Immigrant population,
The Welsh,
The Irish,
Single mothers
The Royals
the list is endless.
As for our football team at least other countries do not look at the Scottish fans as drunken lager swilling loud mouthed trouble making yobs like the English.
Now see how nice we are, my answer will give you something else to moan about.
Stick to what you English know best, Queueing and minding your corner shops and yes we are quit capable of running our own qovernment.

Have you read about the Highland Clearances.
That is what the Chieftains and Lairds think about the Scottish people
Scottish folk are lovely people, I would not wish the SNP into power over anyone.

im proud to be scottish and feel that the only reason scotland may appear to be moaners but would you feel the same if your next door neighbour seized control of your economy, assest and contribution to the world and put you down at every turn. Scotland may not have a strong party that will take us into independence, but i also feel that england plays its part in ensuring that it stays that way.Billions of more barrels of water have been discovered in "scottish water" and i dont think enegerlanders will want to let goof that. Its no worse than the bullying domineriing tatics of the americans and iraq.

The only people who are afraid of Scottish Independence are the English, just think of it, nobody to blame but themselves for their failure to run their own Country. Over the centuries they have had to depend on the People of Scotland, Ireland & Wales to run their Government and Armies. Let us see how they will face up to the cold wind of reality on their own. Of course they will try to run Scotland down, and the people as brainless etc. etc. they have done/continue to do so towards Ireland even up to the present. When have you ever heard a U.K. government minister point to Ireland's success as an example to the people of the United Kingdom?
So, my advise to the people of Scotland is, support each other and go for Independence.

Don't really care, at present we have a Scottish dictatorship in London running England into the ground, the sooner they are gone the better.
