When I was a child, life was for the most part, carefree. We could stay out all day long--into the night, and no one would bother us. We just needed to be home on time for lunch and dinner--that was a biggie to the parents.
These days, however, with a much higher rate of violent crime, with parents working all day long, with the increased availability of drugs/alcohol, etc., people not knowing their neighbors any more--I doubt that children have very many carefree years. Children are forced to grow up much too fast--and they are missing out on so much fun.
Another thing that bothers me is that today's parents seem to think that every single minute in their child's life needs to be filled with structured activities. Bull!! Kids need some free time, to hang out with their friends a the playground--to use their imaginations. This is something else that children are really missing out on--fun!

Other than school and extracurricular activities that my father forced me into, my childhood was pretty carefree.

no i doubt it. many children have troubled ones, life has problems you know. especially in the pre adolescent and adolescent years, these are rocky times, very tough to deal with. ok so the kid doesnt need to go to work to put food on the table, they dont need to cook the meals either, but dont think that theyre not stressed. i think the carefree childhood is a myth

I didn't have a "carefree" childhood. I grew up at the age of 5. Thanks for the question though.

Once I converted my sandbox to a quick sand box and got rid of my older siblings I was very carefree.

Regrettably, no. If your childhood was carefree you were very, very lucky.

There wouldn't be such a need for therapy, medication or shock treatment if that was the case.
