There has to be a default condition. It is like asking "if there was nothing to warm things up, why is it cold, where does the cold come from?" and of course it just happens that cold is the default condition when there is no heat, similar to black or darkness being the default condition when there is no light. So it doesn't really come from anywhere, darkness is esentualy just the lack of light.

there is nothing like brightness and darkness. these are just the perceptions of brain, to distinguish between the amount of light coming from different objects.
mind you, the darkness and brightness can be correspond only to the visible part of light. I mean, only to the visible part of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. Besides this part there are many other parts in the electromagnetic spectrum e.g. gamma ray, X-ray, Ultraviolet, Infra red, microwave, radio. since these parts are not visible to human eye we can't say any thing about the brightness of these rays, although we can attribute this grading of brightness or darkness to those also.
