i just think that i have the right to say it when i want to or even at all and that the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in schools violates the First Amendment's so-called separation of church and state and my freedom of speech, i mean i support this country and all but the least they can do is say within christ, not under god, seeing that 'god' could mean any of the many gods and not the christian god. I think you only need to take an oath once, thats if you are an honorable person, it’s assumed that you don’t need to keep giving your word. taking the pledge every morning implies that at some point in the past 24 hours, you broke your pledge and betrayed your country, either that or it means that you only pledged allegiance for the period of one day, thats atleast wat i think

The Pledge of Allegiance seems to generate extremely powerful feelings and heated debates; people think it is some sort of essential ingredient of American patriotism, or else an essential ingredient of their religious worship, or both at one time.

I wonder how many people would still feel the same about the pledge of allegiance if they realized it was written by a Socialist -- Francis Bellamy.

I wonder how many people would still feel the same about the pledge of allegiance if they could see the famous photo of American school children giving the stiff-arm salute to the flag as they said the pledge.... that stiff-arm salute that became unpopular in this country when people saw Hitler's brownshirts doing it while shouting "Sieg Heil!" (You can see the photo at the wikipedia reference.)

I wonder how many people would feel the same if they could see the film "Once upon a Honeymoon" (see imdb reference) and realize that the words "Under God" were not added until after World War II. The film, a patriotic movie made during World War II, has an example of people saying the pledge with these words conspicuously absent.

West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1943). The court held that schools may not coerce or force students into reciting the pledge, observing the existence of an individual right of conscience to sit silently while others recited. Most schools responded by making the pledge voluntary.

Just curious - Are you against for religous purposes or are you just un-patriotic?

I seem to recall that a couple of states passed laws that mandated saying the Pledge of Allegience in the classroom of public schools; however, I don't know if they've ever been challenged. I have never heard of someone's choice to refrain from saying the pledge being denied in court that I can recall. I think that if you choose not to say it, and are courteous to those who DO choose to repeat it, then there should be no grounds for your being reprimanded. If you've been discourteous (as others have a right to SAY it if they wish), then that would certainly be grounds for a reprimand.

the following is the link everybody seems to settle on. the photo is authentic. It replaced into printed in Time mag and replaced into taken 9/16/07 at an experience in Indianola, Iowa the position six Democratic presidential applicants recognized. It replaced into Iowa Senator Tom Harkin's annual "meat and greet." The fourth individual contained in the photo is Senator Harkin's spouse, Ruth. no longer considered contained in the photo are 3 different applicants who were status out of view on the right component of the platform, Senator Chris Dodd, Senator John Edwards, Senator Joe Biden. At question is what replaced into happening with Senator Obama? His critics are circulating the photo and saying that he's not respecting the flag or the nationwide anthem, highly because the protocol, in accordance to u . s . Flag code, is that civilians must have their correct palms over their hearts and they should be dealing with the flag. His supporters are saying that this little lapse might want to no longer be held hostile to him because there have been fairly some different activities at which he has saluted the flag---so it did not advise that he might want to, in theory, circumvent doing it. some supporters have reported that perhaps the photo does no longer tell the completed tale and that he might want to have raised his hand presently after it replaced into taken. An ABC information video, besides the undeniable fact that, shows that Senator Obama did not salute at any time in the course of the anthem and that all of us else on the platform did. A spokesperson for the Senator advised Fox information that it replaced into ridiculous to point that Obama replaced into making any type of a actuality and that typically "he does and many times he would not position his quit his coronary heart in the course of the nationwide anthem."

The public schools are indoctrination centers to create liberal thinking. The pledge is the only symbol of conservative thinking and therefore is being attacked in the schools, just like the prayer in the public schools. Liberals are Godless and feel more allegiance to Europe.

Does chanting it make you a better American than someone who doesn't?
Does Under God make you feel that God is on our side?
It hasn't been around forever and "Under God' was controversial when president Eisenhower added it.
But the truth is, that unless your dad is a lawyer, you may have to follow the herd.
