Why therrmocouple is preferred over platinum resistance thermometer to measure temp. ?

Cost. The thermocouple might be as accurate as the platinum thermometer for the particular range of temperature you're interested in. The platinum might maintain its linearity at higher and lower ranges, but if you're looking at a tiny range in the middle, there's no use in it.
